Malone Properties chose Freeman French Freeman to design a new retail plaza at the gateway to City Center, South Burlington’s new downtown growth center.

The project includes Vermont’s first Trader Joe’s supermarket as well as a Pier One retail store. The two street-front stores are tied together with a beautifully landscaped public plaza and back-lot parking hidden from public view.

Because of the property’s location—at the gateway to the City Center project—a major design goal was to ensure that the buildings matched the look and feel that the City wanted for its new downtown.

The attractive and functional design combines a traditional brick exterior with large glass windows at street level. Positive reviews of the design from the public and local media helped the owner gain approval for the project from the South Burlington Development Review Board.
