Community Celebrates Major Milestone at BHS

October 9, 2024

School and community leaders were beaming with pride on October 4 as the last section of structural steel was put in place for the new Burlington High School and Technical Center.

The public topping-off ceremony marked a major milestone for the new school.  Demolition and construction crews have been working year-round at the site since Burlington voters overwhelmingly approved the project in November 2023.

The school will be “a place where all learners are challenged, empowered, and engaged,” said Burlington School District Superintendent Tom Flanagan. That sentiment was echoed by Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak and School Board Chair Clare Wool, who also spoke at the event.

The 165-million-dollar project is the first new high school to be built in Vermont in several decades and is designed with 21st century learning principles in mind.  The school is also highly sustainable and will be LEED Gold certified.

The final beam was signed by hundreds of students and community members over several weeks.  The beam signing was a family affair for many, with generations of BHS alumni coming together to leave their mark on the new school.

The new school and technical center will open its doors at the start of the 2026-7 school year.
